The Mets placed right-handed pitcher Christian Scott on the injured list due to a minor hip issue, according to reports from The Athletic and The New York Post. The move allows the team to backdate Scott’s IL placement to June 12, the day after his last start. While the injury is not expected to linger, it adds another challenge to an already struggling Mets rotation.
New York has dealt with consistent rotation issues this season. Kodai Senga has been sidelined since late April with lumbar spine inflammation. Clay Holmes missed time with a fibula fracture and Tylor Megill is out for the season after Tommy John surgery last December. Even when healthy, Mets starters have struggled, with David Peterson posting a 5.75 ERA and Sean Manaea at 4.78.
Scott has been a bright spot, posting a 3.10 ERA in nine starts with a 26.4% strikeout rate and an 82.7% strand rate. His 10.7% walk rate is above average but not alarming. With Scott out, the Mets will turn to depth options to fill the rotation.
Manager Carlos Mendoza announced that the team will recall right-hander Tobias Myers to start tonight’s game, per MLB.com. Myers last pitched in the minors on Thursday, throwing just 2 2/3 innings and 36 pitches. He is not fully stretched out and is expected to pitch a limited workload, with Peterson likely handling the majority of innings.
The Mets currently sit at 32-39, 5.5 games back of a Wild Card spot. They aim to improve their standing before the August 3rd trade deadline. With Scott on the IL, the rotation will rely on Nolan McLean, Freddy Peralta, and a combination of Myers and Peterson. Senga recently resumed a rehab assignment after a setback but remains on the shelf.
Jonah Tong and Zach Thornton are on the 40-man roster but have struggled in Triple-A this season. Tong has a 6.13 ERA while Thornton posted poor results in his lone MLB appearance. Prospects like Jack Wenninger and Xzavion Curry remain options but are not yet proven at the major league level.
The Mets will play four games before their next off-day and face a stretch of 12 consecutive games afterward. The team needs stability in the rotation to remain competitive. Tonight’s game against the Reds will test the patchwork rotation as Myers makes his return to the majors.
