The Baltimore Orioles have recalled right-hander Dean Kremer from Triple-A Norfolk to start tonight’s game. The move came after left-hander Cade Povich was optioned back to the minors in a corresponding adjustment.
Kremer had been a consistent presence in the Orioles’ rotation over the past three seasons. From 2022 to 2025, he made 109 appearances and pitched 599 1/3 innings with a 3.95 ERA. He struck out 20.3% of batters faced while inducing ground balls at a 40% rate. His 7.4% walk rate showed his control and made him a reliable back-end starter.
Kremer’s return to the majors is the result of a series of injuries and roster changes. The Orioles signed free agents Zach Eflin and Chris Bassitt in the offseason and acquired Shane Baz in a trade. When Eflin went on the injured list after experiencing elbow discomfort and eventually underwent Tommy John surgery, a rotation spot opened up. However, the team initially turned to younger arms like Brandon Young and Povich for spot starts instead of recalling Kremer.
Kremer spent time in Norfolk this season, where he continued to perform at a high level. His familiarity with the major league pitching staff and his track record made him a natural candidate for the call-up. With the Orioles playing 13 games in 14 days, the team is managing workload and giving Kremer and Povich alternating starts to maintain flexibility.
Kremer’s service time is also a key factor in this decision. He has 4 years and 112 days of service, just 60 days short of the five-year mark. Once he reaches that threshold, he can no longer be optioned without his consent and will become eligible for free agency after the 2027 season. If Kremer stays on the active roster after tonight’s start, he will hit that five-year mark in June. Any further optioning would pause the clock.
The Orioles are balancing short-term needs with long-term implications. They have two off-days later in the month and could potentially operate with a four-man rotation for a stretch. A return to a five-man rotation could see Young or Povich recalled again depending on performance and injury reports.
Kremer takes the mound tonight as the Orioles continue their busy stretch of games. His performance and the team’s rotation decisions in the coming weeks will shape both his season and his future with the club.
