The Philadelphia Phillies placed outfielder Adolis García on the 60-day injured list with a torn right lat muscle. García suffered the injury during Wednesday’s game in Toronto when he made a diving catch and attempted a one-hop throw to cut down George Springer at home plate. The team also recalled Gabriel Rincones Jr. from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill the roster spot. Outfielder Derek Hill, acquired from the White Sox on Thursday, has reported to the club, while Steward Berroa will be placed on the paternity list.
García’s injury is a major blow to the Phillies, who signed the former Gold Glove winner to a one-year, $10 million contract last offseason. The 33-year-old has struggled at the plate this season, hitting .195/.270/.329 in 259 plate appearances, marking career lows in all three slash categories. Despite his defensive value in right field, García is a .220/.277/.385 hitter in over 1,400 plate appearances since the start of 2024. His offensive inconsistency has been a concern and has led the Phillies to consider a trade for a right field upgrade at the deadline.
The injury also accelerates the timeline for the Phillies to find a solution in right field. With Nick Castellanos no longer on the roster and limited production from center and right field this season, the front office made a move to acquire Hill, a right-handed-hitting fourth or fifth outfielder who can platoon with lefty-swinging players like Brandon Marsh or Justin Crawford. Hill was obtained during yesterday’s off day and fits a complementary role the team needed.
Rincones will get his first major league start in right field tonight against the Milwaukee Brewers. The 24-year-old was added to the 40-man roster last winter to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. He began the season on the minor league IL and has played just 12 Triple-A games since being activated in late May. Rincones hit .240/.370/.430 with Lehigh Valley last season, walking at a 15.8% clip and stealing 21 bases. He is listed at 6’3”, 225 pounds and is not considered a strong defender in the corner outfield.
Rincones faces a tough challenge in his MLB debut as he will be going up against Brewers starter Jacob Misiorowski. The Phillies will look to keep their momentum going after moving back into Wild Card contention following the managerial change. With García sidelined for at least two months, the team must find consistency in the outfield to remain in the playoff race. The next game in the series is set for Friday night in Milwaukee.
