The Colorado Rockies placed outfielder Mickey Moniak on the 10-day injured list due to right ankle tendinitis ahead of their series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rookie Sterlin Thompson was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to fill Moniak’s spot on the roster. The move comes as Moniak has missed significant time and playing through the injury has not yielded positive results at the plate.
Moniak’s injury is the second of the season. He previously missed the first week and a half of the year with a sprained right hand. Manager Warren Schaeffer told Kelsey Wingert-Linch that Moniak sustained the ankle injury in a collision with the wall during a mid-May series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Despite playing through the injury for several weeks, Moniak has struggled, going 2-20 over his last seven games.
The former first overall pick entered the IL with a .280/.335/.607 slash line in 164 plate appearances this season. He leads the Rockies with 12 home runs, placing him in the top 10 in the National League. Moniak’s performance has been even more impressive when considering he has hit .272/.314/.541 in 625 plate appearances since joining the Rockies in 2025.
With Moniak sidelined, Thompson will see his second MLB call-up. The 2022 supplemental first-rounder has struggled recently, hitting just .125 in three games with the Rockies before being sent back to Triple-A. He is set to start at designated hitter against Arizona’s Michael Soroka.
The Rockies are dealing with outfield depth issues after Moniak and Brenton Doyle landed on the injured list in consecutive days. Thompson will likely see regular playing time alongside Jake McCarthy, Troy Johnston, and Tyler Freeman. The move could also impact Moniak’s trade value, as teams may be hesitant to pursue a player who has missed time and shown a recent dip in production.
Moniak’s IL stint is retroactive to June 19. The Rockies will look to rebound in the first of a three-game series against the Diamondbacks. Colorado’s next game is at 6:40 PM MT on ESPN+ as Soroka takes the mound for Arizona.
