The Colorado Rockies placed left-hander José Quintana on the 15-day injured list with a sprained pitching elbow, according to a team announcement. The Rockies recalled left-handed pitcher Welinton Herrera from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move.
Quintana’s injury came after a poor start on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks in which he allowed six earned runs over 1 1/3 innings. The Rockies lost the game 9-1. The 37-year-old will miss at least two weeks, but elbow injuries often require longer recovery periods. This marks the first time an elbow issue has sidelined Quintana, who has been on the IL seven times in his career.
Quintana signed with the Rockies in February on a one-year, $6 million deal, but his performance has been underwhelming. Over nine starts and 41 innings, he has posted a 5.27 ERA. His 11.0% strikeout rate ranks second to last among pitchers with at least 40 innings pitched this season.
The Rockies have been hit hard by injuries in their starting rotation. Ryan Feltner and Chase Dollander have both landed on the IL in recent weeks. Feltner had a 6.30 ERA in five starts before being sidelined in late April with right ulnar nerve inflammation. Dollander, a bright spot with a 3.89 ERA in 44 innings, was forced to the IL on May 15 with an elbow sprain.
With Quintana out, the Rockies will need to fill a rotation spot. Tomoyuki Sugano, Michael Lorenzen, Kyle Freeland, and Tanner Gordon are currently in the rotation. Herrera, 22, is expected to make his major league debut. The Rockies added him to their 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft last winter. In Triple-A this season, Herrera has a 5.16 ERA with a 31.8% strikeout rate and a 13.1% walk rate.
Quintana was scheduled to start this weekend against the Giants. The Rockies will now turn to their remaining options or call up another arm. The team is already tied with the Angels for the worst record in the majors at 20-34, with a 4.98 ERA ranking second-worst in baseball.
