The Boston Red Sox made one of the most impactful moves of the 2025-26 offseason by acquiring veteran slugger Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite a down season overall, Contreras has thrived in his new role, posting elite offensive numbers and showing signs of a career year at age 34.
Through 50 games in 2026, Contreras is hitting .281 with 11 home runs and 33 RBI. His .899 OPS ranks among the American League’s top 10 qualified hitters, and his .393 wOBA is second only to Yordan Alvarez and Aaron Judge. Defensively, Contreras has also improved, posting +3 Defensive Runs Saved and +4 Fielding Run Value at first base, showing more consistency than in his first season at the position.
Contreras leads the Red Sox in home runs, RBI, Win Probability Added, and fWAR, making him a key figure in a struggling lineup. His performance took a brief pause when Nick Martinez hit him on the hand during a game in May, but Contreras responded with a .349 batting average and 1.061 OPS in 11 games since returning.
The Red Sox hope Contreras avoids the injury bug that plagued him earlier in his career. He has never played more than 138 games in a season and was on the injured list 10 times in his first 10 years. If he stays healthy, he’s on track to surpass career highs in home runs, runs scored, and RBI. His current pace suggests a 6.0 fWAR season, which would be the highest of his career and among the best in baseball for players aged 34 and older.
Contreras’ offensive success is backed by compelling data. His pull-air rate has increased to 25% of his batted balls, a career high and a major factor in his success. Batted balls pulled in the air typically produce a wOBA of .730 to .740, and Contreras has thrived in this area with a career .874 wOBA on such contact.
Contreras’ swing speed remains elite, with only 14 of 218 qualified hitters averaging faster bat speed than him this season. Despite being in his mid-thirties, his bat speed on pulled contact is slightly higher than it was last year, showing no signs of decline.
As the Red Sox continue their season, Contreras remains a bright spot. Boston will look to his bat to carry them through a tight AL East race. The next key date for Contreras is the July 31 trade deadline, where his performance could influence Boston’s decisions. If he maintains his current pace, he could make an All-Star team and solidify his case for All-MLB honors.
