The New York Yankees placed catcher Austin Wells on the 10-day injured list with cervical headaches, manager Aaron Boone confirmed to reporters. J.C. Escarra was recalled to fill the roster spot. Wells, who has struggled offensively this season, will undergo additional testing on Sunday.
Wells first reported a headache on Friday night and did not play in the Yankees' rainout against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. Ali Sanchez started behind the plate in his place. Boone clarified that Wells does not have a concussion. The 24-year-old has started three of the last four games and is hitting just .166 with four home runs in 2024.
Jose Caballero pinch-hit for Wells in the ninth inning of Friday’s game, but the move was primarily strategic. The Yankees inserted Caballero to face left-handed closer Aroldis Chapman. Wells is 5-for-50 against southpaws this season, a stark contrast to his career-high 21 home runs in 2023.
Defensively, Wells has been a bright spot. He ranks in the 91st percentile for pitch framing and has recorded 3 Defensive Runs Saved in 400 2/3 innings. His Fielding Run Value is also 3, according to Statcast. However, his offensive struggles have hurt the Yankees, who rank near the bottom of the league at the catcher position in terms of OPS.
Escarra, who was optioned to Triple-A on Friday, will serve as the primary backup. He has a 38 wRC+ in 68 plate appearances this season and will likely form a platoon with Ali Sanchez. Sanchez, whose contract was selected Saturday, is a right-handed bat and should see more action against left-handed pitchers like Ranger Suarez.
The Yankees will look to stabilize their catching situation as they continue their road trip. Wells’ absence could provide an opportunity for Escarra and Sanchez to contribute offensively. The team has until Monday to make a corresponding move if Wells is not activated by the IL deadline.
The Yankees next play on Sunday in a makeup game against the Phillies.
