The Atlanta Braves have signed left-handed pitcher Austin Gomber to a minor league contract. The move comes after the Texas Rangers released Gomber from their own minor league deal. Gomber, represented by THE·TEAM agency, is now in the Braves' system as the team continues to bolster its pitching depth.
Gomber, 32, joined the Rangers in January with hopes of securing the fifth starter role. Instead, he was sent to Triple-A and struggled in nine appearances (eight starts), posting a 7.75 ERA while allowing 41 hits and 14 unintentional walks over 33 2/3 innings. The performance was a stark contrast to his 2024 season with the Colorado Rockies, where he posted a 4.75 ERA in 30 starts.
Before joining the Rangers, Gomber spent the 2025 season with the Rockies but was plagued by injury and inconsistency. He started the year on the injured list with a left shoulder issue and returned on June 15. Over 12 starts, he had a 7.49 ERA and a 12.5% strikeout rate while allowing 16 home runs in 57 2/3 innings. His release came on August 22.
Despite his recent struggles, Gomber was a solid No. 5 starter in 2024. He threw 165 innings with a 5.5% walk rate, which FanGraphs valued at 1.3 WAR. Adjusted for Coors Field, his 4.75 ERA was close to league average. That performance is only two years old and gives the Braves reason to believe in a potential bounce-back.
Atlanta’s rotation has been one of the best in baseball, leading the Majors with a 2.93 ERA through 45 games. Chris Sale and Bryce Elder have ERAs below 2.00, and Spencer Strider has returned from the IL with promise. With JR Ritchie still developing and depth shaken by spring injuries, Gomber could serve as a Triple-A option or a potential call-up if needed.
Gomber’s contract does not impact the 40-man roster and offers the Braves a low-risk opportunity to evaluate his upside. He will report to Triple-A and work to regain major league form. The Braves have until July 15 to add him to their 40-man roster if he shows progress.
