The Arizona Diamondbacks have outrighted first baseman Luken Baker to Triple-A Reno, according to the MLB.com transaction log. The move came after the team designated him for assignment to make room for Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s return from the injured list.
Baker was called up to the majors on April 7 to serve as a bench bat after Carlos Santana suffered an adductor strain. Over his 11-day stint on the active roster, Baker played in just one game and went 1-5 with three strikeouts. Arizona saw little production from him and elected to move on, despite his strong minor league numbers.
The 25-year-old right-handed hitter has appeared in the majors for four consecutive seasons. His first MLB work came with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he was drafted in 2017. Baker was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers in August 2023 but did not appear in a game with the club and was outrighted off the 40-man roster a week later. He joined Arizona on a minor league deal in the offseason.
At the big league level, Baker has hit .206/.314/.333 over 194 plate appearances. His minor league production has been more consistent, as he hit .223/.335/.441 in 95 games between the Cardinals and Dodgers systems last season. In Triple-A, he has mashed 65 home runs over the past two seasons.
With Baker now off the 40-man roster, the Diamondbacks have more flexibility at first base. Santana is currently on the injured list, along with Pavin Smith and Tyler Locklear. Ildemaro Vargas and rookie Jose Fernandez are splitting first base duties in the interim.
Baker is now free to accept assignment to Reno or opt for free agency. His decision is expected soon, with the minor league season winding down and the winter meetings approaching.

The Houston Astros have outrighted right-hander J.P. France to Triple-A Sugar Land. The move comes after France cleared waivers following his designation for assignment last week. The 28-year-old now has the option to elect free agency, though the club has not yet announced his decision.
