The Cleveland Guardians have traded outfielder Nolan Jones to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for a $250K international bonus pool allotment. Jones, who cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Charlotte, will not appear on Chicago’s 40-man roster. The Guardians will continue to cover a portion of Jones’ $1.15 million remaining salary through the end of the season.
Jones, 28, has had a mixed career since his MLB debut with the Rockies in 2022. His breakout came in 2023, when he hit .297/.389/.542 with 20 home runs in over 400 plate appearances. Injuries limited him to just 79 games in 2024, and his numbers dropped significantly to .227/.321/.320 with three homers.
The Rockies traded Jones back to Cleveland before the 2024 season. Despite spending most of the year on the active roster, he struggled offensively, posting a .211/.296/.304 line with a 28% strikeout rate. The Guardians surprised many by offering Jones a $2 million arbitration contract, but he failed to secure a spot in spring training and was sent to Triple-A.
Jones has bounced back in the minors this season, hitting .275/.385/.460 with eight home runs in 226 plate appearances. He strikes out at a 24.3% rate but draws walks at a strong 14.2% clip, continuing his “three true outcomes” approach.
The Guardians are gaining salary relief by offloading part of Jones’ deal. The White Sox, meanwhile, are acquiring depth in right field without taking on a significant financial commitment. Chicago is also using the $250K bonus pool space in a separate trade with the Phillies involving Derek Hill.
Jones is eligible for arbitration if he’s called up before the season ends. If not, he’ll become a minor league free agent after the season. The White Sox are currently in better shape with Braden Montgomery and Everson Pereira healthy, but Jones adds insurance for potential call-ups.
The Guardians will continue to monitor their outfield options, which include 10 players on the 40-man roster. The White Sox will evaluate Jones’ performance in Triple-A as the trade deadline approaches.
