The Kansas City Royals designated catcher Elias Díaz for assignment to make room for outfielder Tyler Tolbert, who was recalled from the minors. The move brings the Royals’ 40-man roster count down to 39 and shifts their catching depth.
Díaz, 35, joined the Royals on a minor league deal in the offseason and had his contract selected to the big league roster in early April. He played a backup role behind Carter Jensen and Salvador Pérez, hitting two home runs in 23 plate appearances. His .227/.261/.591 slash line and 128 wRC+ in that limited sample was enough to show some pop, but not enough to guarantee his roster spot.
The decision to DFA Díaz likely stems from broader roster needs. Salvador Pérez has shown improved production in May with a .231/.297/.400 line after a slow start, and Lane Thomas has been sidelined with a sore hamstring. By adding Tolbert to the outfield, the Royals have sacrificed their three-catcher setup in favor of more depth in the corners.
Díaz’s DFA opens a 48-hour waiver period. The Royals have five days to explore trade interest before making a final decision. While Díaz’s age and small-sample performance may limit his trade value, his defensive skills, particularly his throwing and blocking, could interest teams in need of catching help.
Teams like the Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, New York Mets, and Minnesota Twins are all dealing with catching shortages. Atlanta recently lost both Sean Murphy and Drake Baldwin to the injured list, while Cal Raleigh, Francisco Álvarez, and Ryan Jeffers are also on the IL. Díaz could potentially fill a short-term need for any of them.
Díaz’s career stats are modest but consistent: a .246/.300/.385 line with a 78 wRC+. While his framing grades have historically been average at best, his defensive reputation remains solid.
The next step is clear. If no trade is made, the Royals will have to decide whether to release or outright Díaz. The window for action closes in five days.
