The New York Mets have moved to bolster their pitching options by selecting the contract of right-hander Daniel Duarte. To make room on the active roster, righty Joey Gerber was optioned to Triple-A. Additionally, lefty A.J. Minter was transferred to the 60-day injured list to open a 40-man roster spot.
Duarte, 29, signed a minor league contract with the Mets in the offseason and has spent the season with Triple-A Syracuse. Over 12 appearances, he has thrown 17 1/3 innings, posting a 2.60 ERA. However, his underlying numbers tell a different story. His 19.7% strikeout rate and 12.7% walk rate are both below league average, and his 4.21 FIP suggests his ERA is inflated by favorable outcomes.
The Mets are in a transitional phase in their rotation, especially after right-hander Clay Holmes was recently sidelined with an injury. The current rotation includes Christian Scott, Nolan McLean, David Peterson, and Freddy Peralta, with Peterson often pitching behind an opener. The team has Tobias Myers and Sean Manaea as potential options for relief work, though Manaea recently threw four innings behind Peralta and will be unavailable for a few days.
Christian Scott is set to start tonight’s game. He has yet to pitch beyond five innings in any game this season. Nolan McLean is scheduled for tomorrow’s start. With Holmes’s turn on Wednesday, the Mets will need a plan, whether it involves Myers in a bullpen game or a call-up from the minors.
Duarte has made five appearances of two innings or more this season, including three of his last four outings. He hasn’t pitched since May 12, making him a fresh arm for potential long relief or multi-inning work. Gerber, who has also been inactive since May 12, has mostly pitched one-inning outings in the minors and may not be as ready for extended work.
As for Minter, he underwent lat surgery last year and began a rehab assignment this spring. He was pulled in early May due to left hip discomfort. Minter started a new rehab session on May 15, pitching an inning for Syracuse. He will be eligible for reinstatement next week after being on the 15-day IL all season.
