The United States Men’s National Team opened the 2026 World Cup with a commanding 4-0 victory over Paraguay in a performance that showcased tactical brilliance and attacking fluidity. Tyler Adams, Christian Pulisic, and Weston McKennie led the charge as the U.S. dominated possession and created relentless pressure.
The U.S. controlled the game from the outset, with a staggering 68% of possession and 22 shots compared to Paraguay’s five. Tyler Adams was instrumental in midfield, logging 92% passing accuracy and registering three key passes. His ability to dictate tempo and transition from defense to attack was critical in breaking down the South American side.
Christian Pulisic continued his elite form, scoring a goal and assisting on another. The Chelsea forward made 11 successful dribbles and completed 95% of his passes. His movement and vision opened up channels for the U.S. attack, which was relentless in pressing high and cutting off passing lanes.
Weston McKennie was another standout performer, completing 93% of his passes and making three tackles while pressing forward with intensity. His ability to stretch the field and provide width helped the U.S. create multiple chances, culminating in a 39th-minute goal that put the U.S. up 2-0.

The U.S. defense was equally impressive, with centerbacks Tim Ream and Chris Richards forming a near-perfect backline. Richards completed 84/84 passes, setting a new record for pass accuracy in a World Cup match. The U.S. conceded just one shot on target all game and remained unbeaten in their first match of the tournament.

Paraguay coach Gustavo Alfaro admitted the U.S. was "complex" and "dominated tactically, technically and physically." He specifically noted the U.S. midfield's "pentagon" shape, referring to the five players operating in central areas. This high-intensity pressing and coordinated movement overwhelmed Paraguay’s defense and disrupted their rhythm.
The U.S. will next face Mexico in a highly anticipated Group A match on June 16. With a perfect start and a confident squad, the Americans are showing they are ready to compete for more than just a spot in the knockout rounds.
