The United States Men's National Team opened their 2026 World Cup campaign with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paraguay, showcasing offensive firepower and composure in a high-scoring contest at SoFi Stadium. Folarin Balogun, Weston McKennie, and Gio Reyna all found the back of the net while Christian Pulisic and Malik Tillman starred in the buildup.
The match started in electrifying fashion as the U.S. stormed out to a 3-0 lead within the first 40 minutes. The opening goal came in the eighth minute when Paraguay’s Facundo Bombadilla turned in a cross from Weston McKennie, who had just completed a sharp interchange with Christian Pulisic. McKennie’s vision and delivery were instrumental in the play, and the U.S. took a 1-0 lead into the 10th minute.
Balogun made it 2-0 in the 31st minute, finishing off a well-constructed attack. Antonee Robinson provided a pinpoint through ball to Pulisic, who played a clever one-touch assist to the striker. Balogun’s clinical finish marked his first goal of the night and sent the home crowd into a frenzy.
Just before halftime, Malik Tillman delivered a sublime through ball to Balogun, who used his pace and composure to beat the backline and score his second of the night. The goal extended the U.S. lead to 3-0 and capped a dominant first half where the Americans controlled 71% of possession and outshot their opponents 14-3.
At halftime, Christian Pulisic was substituted for Sebastian Berhalter, a decision that raised eyebrows among fans. Paraguay took advantage of the shift in momentum in the second half, scoring in the 73rd minute to cut the deficit to one.
The U.S. responded with fresh legs. Tim Weah and Ricardo Pepi came on in the 72nd minute, while Gio Reyna replaced Tillman in the 82nd. Reyna capped the night with a sensational goal in stoppage time, curling a shot from the edge of the box with the outside of his boot to make it 4-1.
The win gives the U.S. a perfect start to the World Cup and sets a high bar for the rest of the group stage. With key players like Balogun (2 goals), McKennie (1 goal, 1 assist), and Reyna (1 goal) leading the way, the Americans appear to be in strong position in Group C.
Next up for the U.S. is a match against Serbia on Monday, where they will look to maintain their winning momentum.
