With just 48 days until the USMNT unveils its 2026 World Cup roster, the final stretch of selection is heating up. MLS players are using the April window to make their cases, with key matches and standout performances shaping the hierarchy of contenders.
Matt Freese (New York City FC)
Freese is a lock in goal. The 27-year-old made seven saves in the USMNT’s 2-0 win over Portugal last month and has been a steady presence for NYCFC, which is currently fifth in the Eastern Conference. His consistency and composure make him Pochettino’s likely starter in goal.
Matt Turner (New England Revolution)
Turner is a near-lock. The 28-year-old earned his first start of 2026 in the Portugal match, allowing two goals but showing leadership and distribution. While he may not start the opener, his experience and positioning give him a strong claim to a backup spot.
Tim Ream (Charlotte FC)
Ream remains a trusted leader in defense but is trending downward. The 38-year-old has struggled with form, averaging 1.3 tackles per game in 2026. His leadership is irreplaceable, but younger options are catching up.
Max Arfsten (Columbus Crew)
Arfsten is a top-10 contender. The 24-year-old has created 12 chances in six games this season and is thriving in a wingback role. If Pochettino sticks with a 3-4-2-1 system, Arfsten is a lock. A move to a 4-4-2 could drop him.
Miles Robinson (FC Cincinnati)
Robinson is trending upward. The 27-year-old missed the USMNT’s last two matches due to injury but has averaged 3.2 clearances per game for FC Cincinnati. His athleticism and aerial ability give him a solid case as a backup center back.

Sebastian Berhalter (Vancouver Whitecaps FC)
Berhalter is trending in. The 29-year-old made a game-winning tackle in stoppage time against Portland and has created 10 chances in 2026. His energy and work rate are exactly what Pochettino values in a box-to-box midfielder.
Diego Luna (Real Salt Lake)
Luna is surging. The 26-year-old scored and created three chances in his first start of 2026 for RSL and has averaged 3.5 key passes per game. His creativity and pressing make him a rising contender for a midfield role.
Cristian Roldan (Seattle Sounders FC)
Roldan is a consistent performer. The 29-year-old has started every Sounders match this season and has averaged 3.8 tackles per game. His versatility and work rate in Seattle’s top-five Western Conference team keep him in the running.
Chris Brady (Chicago Fire FC)
Brady is an emerging threat. The 22-year-old earned man of the match honors in a 1-0 win over Nashville and has kept three clean sheets in 2026. His rise in camp and strong MLS form could land him as the third-string goalkeeper.
Walker Zimmerman (Toronto FC)
Zimmerman is down. The 34-year-old has missed time with injuries and has averaged 2.1 clearances per game in 2026. While his aerial dominance is valuable, his inconsistency could cost him a spot.

Jack McGlynn (Houston Dynamo FC)
McGlynn is on the fringe. The 29-year-old has created 8 chances in 6 games and has a 78% pass completion rate. His left-footed playmaking is a niche asset, but it may not be enough for a 26-man roster.
Brian White (Vancouver Whitecaps FC)
White is a long shot. The 27-year-old has 5 goals in 6 games and has averaged 2.5 shots per match. His finishing is sharp, but the USMNT has multiple forward options ahead of him.
Josh Sargent (Toronto FC)
Sargent is an outside chance. The 24-year-old scored his first goal for Toronto and has averaged 1.3 shots on target per game. If he maintains his form, he could push for a late call-up.
Tristan Blackmon (Vancouver Whitecaps FC)
Blackmon is a dark horse. The 2025 MLS Defender of the Year has made 1.5 interceptions per game in 2026 and is a capable aerial defender. He may get a chance if Pochettino is still searching for options.
Next up, the USMNT will continue its training camp with a final set of matches before announcing the roster on May 12. MLS teams will also play key matches to close out the April window, with Vancouver hosting New York City on Saturday.

The San Antonio Spurs edged the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 on Friday night, but the story was not the win. It was Victor Wembanyama’s 40-point, 13-rebound performance in just 26 minutes, a calculated move to reach the 65-game threshold required for regular-season award eligibility.
