Five-star guard Davion Thompson committed to Arkansas on Wednesday, choosing the Razorbacks over Baylor, Michigan, and Vanderbilt for the 2027 recruiting class. The No. 27 recruit in the ESPN 100 made the announcement, marking John Calipari’s first commitment of the incoming class.
Thompson, who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 180 pounds, is known for his elite ball-handling, playmaking ability, and defensive instincts. During his junior season, he averaged 22.4 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game for Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada. His on-ball defense and ability to create for teammates have drawn comparisons to former five-star guards like Tyus Jones and D’Angelo Russell.
Thompson cited his relationship with Calipari as the deciding factor in his decision. "Coach Cal has done it at the highest level and for a long time," Thompson said. "He has helped a lot of guards reach their goals. Coach Cal is real. He's a great coach, he is honest, and he cares about his players on and off the court."
Arkansas joins a growing list of programs that Calipari has revitalized. In his first full season with the Razorbacks in 2023-24, the team reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in over a decade and finished with a 21-14 record. Calipari has already secured commitments from top recruits like Thompson and is expected to continue building a competitive roster for the 2027-28 season.
Baylor and Michigan both offered strong programs but could not match the unique opportunity Calipari brings to Fayetteville. Thompson’s commitment gives Arkansas a boost in the early stages of the 2027 class, which is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in the Southeast.
With Thompson on board, Arkansas is in position to add more top-tier talent before the official recruiting period opens in November 2025. The next step for the Razorbacks is to continue locking down commitments and building a cohesive team around Calipari’s system.

The Dallas Mavericks have made it clear to interested teams that Kyrie Irving is not for sale, sources told Marc Stein of The Stein Line. However, the Mavs remain open to trading Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, and Daniel Gafford as they continue to evaluate their roster ahead of the trade deadline.
