San Antonio Spurs fell 105-104 to the New York Knicks in Game 2 of the NBA Finals, but heading into Game 3 at Madison Square Garden, the Spurs are ready to erase the past and focus on the present. With a 2-0 series deficit, the Spurs must become just the fifth team in NBA history to overcome a 2-0 Finals hole, a feat last accomplished by the 2021 Milwaukee Bucks. Victor Wembanyama, the franchise’s rising star, is embracing the pressure and the opportunity.
Wembanyama led the Spurs in scoring and rebounding in Game 2 with 23 points and 12 boards, but his late-game mistakes, a turnover, a missed shot, and a foul, proved costly. The Spurs led by as many as seven in the fourth quarter but couldn’t hold on. Jalen Brunson, who finished with 21 points and six assists, sank the go-ahead free throw with 9.5 seconds left after Wembanyama’s turnover. It marked the first time in the play-by-play era that a player committed a turnover, foul, and missed shot in the final 10 seconds of a Finals game.
Despite the loss, Wembanyama remains confident. “This is everything that I wished for,” he said. “There’s really no reason to overthink it. This is what I’m built for.” The Spurs are now relying on that mindset as they prepare for a Game 3 showdown.
Mitch Johnson voiced similar confidence, pointing to discipline and clutch execution as areas for improvement. “We’ve got one game tomorrow night at 8:30 in Madison Square Garden,” Johnson said. “It’s the only game that matters. We’ve got to come in here ready to win it.”
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich addressed the team before their flight to New York, urging them to move past the previous two games. “They were very winnable games,” said Stephon Castle. “We feel like we gave them those games. We’ve got to let those go and focus on the next one.”
San Antonio has struggled at MSG, losing six straight games there since a 2019 win. The Spurs are now one game from elimination, but they’re not backing down. With Wembanyama and Brunson headlining a battle of young stars, Game 3 promises to be a pivotal moment in the 2024 NBA Finals.
The Spurs and Knicks tip off at 8:30 p.m. ET for Game 3, with the series on the line.
