The San Antonio Spurs edged the Minnesota Timberwolves 115-108 in Game 3 of the Western Conference Semifinals behind a historic performance from Victor Wembanyama who recorded 39 points, 15 rebounds, and five blocks. The win gives San Antonio a 2-1 series lead.
Victor Wembanyama became only the fourth player in NBA history to post 35+ points, 15+ rebounds, and five+ blocks in a playoff game since 1973-74. Joining him in this elite group are Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
"I had to resort to some things that Hakeem taught me in the fourth quarter," Wembanyama said. The 22-year-old worked directly with Olajuwon last summer and used those lessons to execute a spinning fadeaway on Rudy Gobert and knock down a 25-footer to extend San Antonio’s lead to six in the fourth quarter.
Wembanyama shot 72.2% from the floor and made 3 of 5 three-point attempts. He was the first player to reach 35 points and 15 rebounds on 70% shooting since LeBron James in the 2012 Eastern Conference Finals. His presence forced Minnesota into 4-of-21 shooting on contested shots.
Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves with 32 points, including 12 in the final two minutes of the first quarter to erase an early 18-3 San Antonio lead. But the Spurs defense held firm down the stretch.
"He really imposed himself on the game," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "He established himself dominating the paint and rim on both ends. When he does that, it kind of feels like everything opens up for himself and his teammates."
Despite the performance, Wembanyama remains focused on the bigger picture. "I think we haven't done anything yet," he said. "We've still got to prove to ourselves that we can sustain that."
The Spurs are favored by 4.5 points in Game 4, which is set for Sunday. A win could put them one step closer to the Western Conference Finals.
