The Philadelphia 76ers are finalizing their search for a new lead basketball executive to replace Daryl Morey, with names like Matt Lloyd, Mike Gansey and Nick U'Ren among the top candidates. Bob Myers, who will oversee the executive who fills the role, is leading the process. The Sixers are seeking a seasoned front office leader to guide the team through a pivotal season and beyond.
Matt Lloyd, currently the general manager of the Minnesota Timberwolves under Tim Connelly, is a strong contender. Lloyd was previously a top candidate for the Chicago Bulls' front office vacancy, which ultimately went to Bryson Graham in February 2024. Lloyd’s experience in managing a high-stakes rebuild and his success in player development make him a compelling choice for Philadelphia.
Mike Gansey, the general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers under Koby Altman, is also in the mix. Gansey has been credited with helping turn around Cleveland’s roster over the past three seasons. Under his leadership, the Cavaliers have seen a 12-point increase in offensive rating and a 9-point boost in defensive efficiency since 2021. His strategic approach to free agency and trades has drawn the attention of other top teams.
Nick U'Ren, currently the lead basketball executive for the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA, is another name on Myers’ shortlist. U'Ren and Myers worked together for nine years with the Golden State Warriors, where they helped build a dynasty that won six NBA championships from 2015 to 2018. U'Ren’s experience in player evaluation and team-building could be a valuable fit for the Sixers.
The Sixers have also considered Onsi Saleh, the Atlanta Hawks’ assistant general manager, but have determined that the Hawks will not make him available. Saleh has been a key architect of Atlanta’s rebuild under new president of basketball operations John Schuerholz.
With the Sixers entering a make-or-break season, the hiring of a new lead basketball executive will have immediate and long-term implications for the team’s direction. The front office is expected to finalize its decision by the end of July, with the new executive likely to take a central role in shaping the team’s approach to free agency and the 2025 NBA Draft.
The next step for the Sixers will come as soon as the league’s free agency moratorium lifts on July 1.
