Five NBA teams dominated the 2025-26 regular season by finishing in the top 10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. This dual dominance historically identifies legitimate title contenders, with 75 percent of champions since 1974 posting similar two-way consistency. The Oklahoma City Thunder led the way with the league’s best defensive rating at 107.2 while ranking seventh offensively at 119.2. The San Antonio Spurs, Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons, and New York Knicks also cracked the top 10 in both categories.
The Thunder’s two-way dominance was unmatched. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 29.3 points per game while the team’s defense held opponents to the lowest points per 100 possessions in the league. Oklahoma City’s net rating ranked in the top five, a clear indicator of their balanced approach to winning.
The Spurs followed closely behind with a third-ranked defensive rating of 110.9 and fifth in offensive efficiency at 119.3. San Antonio’s veteran leadership and elite ball movement made them one of the most efficient teams in the league. Dejounte Murray’s all-around play and the team’s 13-4 road record in April helped them maintain their high rankings.
Boston’s offensive firepower was the league’s second-best at 120.7 while the Celtics ranked fourth defensively at 112.8. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown combined for 52.3 points per game in the regular season. Boston’s 10-2 home record in the final month of the season highlighted their championship pedigree.
The Pistons ranked second in defensive efficiency at 109.7 and 10th offensively at 117.7. Detroit’s defense was anchored by Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren, who combined for 24.1 points and 12.5 rebounds per game. The team’s 6-10 record in April showed some inconsistency but their two-way foundation remains strong.
New York finished third offensively at 120.0 and eighth defensively at 113.4. The Knicks’ offense was led by Jalen Brunson’s 22.4 points per game and their defense held opponents to just 109.3 points per game in the final month. Their net rating ranked in the top five, reinforcing their status as a legitimate playoff contender.
The Denver Nuggets and Cleveland Cavaliers entered the playoffs with better championship odds than the Knicks and Pistons despite falling outside the top 10 in one category each. Historically, teams outside the top 10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency have rarely won titles. The Houston Rockets in 1995 remain the only exception to the rule.
The Thunder, Spurs, Celtics, Pistons, and Knicks now turn their focus to the postseason. The first round matchups will be set on Monday as the league’s elite teams prepare for the ultimate test of two-way dominance.

LeBron James and Brandon Ingram have been named the NBA's Players of the Week for Week 25. The Los Angeles Lakers' James averaged 24.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 9.7 assists while leading the team to a 3-1 record. Ingram of the Toronto Raptors added 25.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game as the Raptor
