Bill Simmons revealed Thursday that the Boston Celtics have reentered the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade race, contradicting earlier reports that Boston was out of the mix. The Greek superstar has been linked to the Miami Heat in recent days, but Simmons claims the Celtics are now in on the deal. Antetokounmpo is reportedly considering a move to either Boston or Miami, with the Celtics offering the best chance to win a title.
Simmons noted that the Celtics were previously ruled out of the Giannis sweepstakes. “I thought Boston was out of this. I know Boston was out of this,” he said. “I think they were playing a little possum. I think they're in on Giannis.”
Despite earlier indications that Boston wanted to keep its core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Derrick White intact, the Celtics now appear open to a major shakeup. Simmons speculated that the team could be using Miami’s offer as a benchmark to drive up the price. The Celtics hold $27 million in trade exceptions and up to four future first-round picks, including two swaps, giving them the financial and asset flexibility to pursue a blockbuster trade.
Antetokounmpo, who is entering the final year of his contract, is averaging 25.3 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game this season. His versatility and leadership make him a coveted asset, and the Celtics would gain a two-time MVP who has won back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year awards.
For Boston, acquiring Giannis could reshape their identity. The team has struggled to find consistent success in the paint, and adding a dominant inside-outside force like Antetokounmpo could address that issue. However, such a move would also require significant cap flexibility and the willingness to part with key assets or even young players.
Miami’s offer remains the gold standard, but Simmons suggests the Celtics are not ruling out the possibility of a deal. “I think you can basically say... it goes back to the Brad Stevens' speech right after the Philly series when he was really mad about the result and really questioning whether this was the right style and whether they needed to be in the paint more,” Simmons said.
A trade involving Antetokounmpo is expected to be finalized by the 2026 NBA draft on June 23rd. Jake Fischer also reported Thursday that the Celtics are being considered as a potential destination for the Greek superstar.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Celtics have the tools to make a move. Now it’s up to Brad Stevens and the front office to decide if they’re willing to reshape the roster for a chance to win now.
