James Harden is set to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers on a multi-year contract this summer, according to multiple sources. The deal is expected to be finalized in the offseason, with both sides having already reached an understanding. The 33-year-old guard will rejoin Cleveland after being acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers at the trade deadline.
Harden was traded to the Cavaliers in part due to uncertainty surrounding his $42 million team option for the 2025-26 season. The Clippers had not committed to the option, prompting Harden and his representatives to seek a team willing to offer contract security. Cleveland stepped in and made that commitment, ensuring Harden’s return for the foreseeable future.
The new deal is expected to include a reduced annual salary in exchange for more guaranteed money over additional seasons. This structure will help the Cavaliers manage their second-apron obligations. Cleveland currently has the NBA’s largest payroll at $226 million, and when factoring in the luxury tax, the total exceeds $280 million.
Harden joined the Cavaliers in February and averaged 19.3 points, 7.1 assists, and 5.6 rebounds per game in the regular season. His impact has been felt immediately on and off the court, with head coach Kenny Atkinson working to build a strong rapport. During a recent postgame locker room video, Harden was seen addressing teammates, showing his leadership presence.
Atkinson has drawn from Harden’s past success, particularly during his time with Mike D'Antoni in Houston. Harden produced four of his five All-NBA seasons under D'Antoni, including back-to-back MVP awards in 2017 and 2018. Atkinson is using that history to shape his approach with the three-time scoring champion.
Harden has struggled with consistency in the playoffs, averaging 18.3 points and 6.8 assists per game in the first round against the Detroit Pistons. However, Cleveland remains committed to him regardless of the outcome of the second-round series. The Pistons are currently leading the best-of-seven matchup 3-2.
With Harden’s return secured, the Cavaliers can now focus on their path to the Eastern Conference Finals. The team plays Game 6 in Detroit on Sunday. If the series ends in a tie, Game 7 will be in Cleveland.

The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in Game 3 of their playoff series on May 26, 2026, with a commanding 38-13 shot advantage that exposed flaws in Montreal’s conservative game plan. Key performers included Martin St. Louis, who guided the Canadiens’ structured offense, and L
