Joe Ingles has officially signed a two-year contract with Melbourne United, bringing the veteran NBA guard back to his professional roots in Australia. The 36-year-old, who began his career with the South Dragons in 2006, will return to the NBL after a 13-year NBA journey that included stints with the Los Angeles Clippers, Utah Jazz, Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Ingles spent three seasons in Spain with Granada and Barcelona before joining Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2013-14. He made his NBA debut with the Clippers in 2014 and found his long-term home with the Jazz from 2015 to 2022. During his seven seasons in Utah, Ingles averaged 6.7 points and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 38.3% from three-point range. His tenure was cut short in January 2022 when he tore his ACL.
After recovering, Ingles joined the Bucks and Magic, playing a combined 26 games across the two teams in the 2022-23 season. He averaged 5.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Last season with the Timberwolves, he appeared in 64 games and averaged 5.9 points and 3.6 assists per contest.
"Coming home to Melbourne feels incredibly special," Ingles said. "To return to where my professional career began almost 20 years ago is something I don't take for granted. So much has happened since then, but Melbourne has always felt like home."
The move is a significant boost for Melbourne United, which finished 11th in the NBL in points per game last season at 92.8. Ingles will bring leadership, shooting, and playmaking to a team looking to improve its offensive output. His return also strengthens the team’s connection to the local community and basketball culture in Australia.
Ingles will be eligible to suit up for Melbourne United in the upcoming NBL season, which is scheduled to begin in July.
