Detroit Pistons general manager Trajan Langdon confirmed Tuesday that the club is pursuing contract extensions with All-Star center Jalen Duren and veteran forward Tobias Harris. The announcement comes after a 60-win regular season that ended in a Game 7 second-round loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Both players are set to become free agents this summer.
Langdon spoke directly about Duren, who is eligible to become a restricted free agent. "We look forward to coming together with his representation," Langdon said. Duren, 22, averaged 19.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game during the regular season, earning his first All-Star nod and a projected All-NBA selection. His playoff numbers dipped to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest.
Duren was drafted 13th overall in 2022 by the Charlotte Hornets and acquired by Detroit in a draft-night trade. He has averaged 11.4 points per game across his first three seasons before exploding onto the scene in 2024. If he qualifies for a max deal, Duren could command up to a 30 percent max contract.
Tobias Harris, 34, is entering unrestricted free agency after the second and final year of his contract. Harris averaged 18.2 points per game in the playoffs, serving as a key offensive weapon alongside Cade Cunningham on a defensive-minded team. His scoring consistency helped Detroit reach the second round for the first time in years.
"We hope that we can bring him back," Langdon said. "He's somebody we want to keep in a Pistons uniform."
The Pistons are in a strong position to match any offers Duren receives due to his restricted free agent status. Harris’s situation is less secure, but his veteran leadership and offensive production make him a valuable piece for a team with playoff aspirations.
Langdon added, "JD had a fantastic season. He's one of the biggest contributors to us being a No. 1 seed."
With free agency set to begin on June 30, Detroit has a window to lock down both players before the market opens. The moves could determine whether the Pistons continue their playoff push or face a rebuild.
