The Indianapolis Colts and cornerback Kenny Moore II have mutually agreed to seek a trade, ending a nine-year tenure that saw Moore become one of the league's most dependable slot defenders. ESPN reported the move Friday, as the team continues its defensive rebuild with a younger core.
Moore, 30, spent his entire career with the Colts after arriving as an undrafted free agent from Valdosta State in 2017. Over nine seasons, he recorded 21 interceptions, four of which he returned for touchdowns. He also tallied 68 passes defended, 649 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and six forced fumbles. His 2021 Pro Bowl season remains the pinnacle of his career.
Signed to a three-year, $30 million contract in 2024, Moore is entering the final year of the deal with a base salary of $9.49 million. The Colts can save approximately $7 million in cap space by trading him before June 1, with $6.05 million in dead money. The move aligns with the team’s goal of rejuvenating the defense, especially after Moore missed three games last season due to injury and struggled to adjust to new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo's scheme.
Moore's departure opens the door for 2025 third-round pick Justin Walley, who missed his rookie season after tearing his ACL in training camp. Walley, 22, is expected to step into the nickel role and provide the kind of youthful energy the Colts are prioritizing.
Teams looking to add a reliable slot corner may find Moore a valuable asset despite his age. His ability to stick with quick receivers and break up short passes remains a key trait. However, his recent performance and scheme limitations could limit his trade value. The Colts will likely seek a mid-round draft pick or a young player in return.
Moore’s name is now on the trade block, and the market will determine where his career goes next. For the Colts, the focus shifts to integrating younger talent like Walley and building toward a more dynamic defensive future.
