Coachella Valley ended Colorado’s dominance with a 4-0 shutout in Game 2 of the Pacific Division finals on Friday night. J.R. Avon led the way with two goals, breaking a scoreless third period deadlock and cementing the Firebirds’ first win of the series.
Avon’s first goal came just 1:20 into the third period, ending goaltender Trent Miner’s playoff shutout streak at 145 minutes and 10 seconds. Miner had been stellar in Game 1, but the Firebirds finally found a way to crack the Colorado defense. Just 71 seconds later, Eduard Šalé doubled the lead with a quick shot past Miner, making it the first time the Eagles had trailed by two goals in the postseason.
Nikke Kokko was in net for the Firebirds and made 33 saves en route to his second playoff shutout of the year. Kokko’s sharp performance was critical in preserving the lead and ensuring the shutout. His 6-4 record in the playoffs shows his growing importance in the Firebirds’ run.

Avon added an insurance goal with 3:55 remaining, and Oscar Fiasker Mølgaard sealed the game with an empty-net goal with 1:43 to go. The 4-0 final score was a complete reversal from Game 1, where Colorado won 3-0.
The series is now tied at 1-1, and the teams will shift to Denver for Game 3 on Sunday. With Kokko’s two playoff shutouts and Miner’s 21 saves in Game 2, the goaltending battle remains a key storyline. The Firebirds are now 6-4 in the playoffs, while the Eagles fall to 6-2.

Coachella Valley will look to carry the momentum into Colorado, where they will face a hostile environment in Game 3. The series will continue with Game 3 set for Sunday at 8:05 p.m. Eastern. Games 4 and 5 will follow on May 20 and May 22 if needed.
