Great Britain began their IIHF World Championship campaign with a critical Group A opener against Austria at the Swiss Life Arena.
With Austria and Hungary also in the group, the stakes are high for Pete Russell’s squad, who finished first in last season’s Division 1A in Romania. The team will face Hungary in their third game, a key contest for promotion chances.
Pete Russell has a fully fit roster to choose from, and the full line-up will be announced ahead of faceoff. Liam Kirk joined the team on Wednesday after winning the DEL2 playoffs in Germany, adding depth and experience to the squad.
Seven players could make their World Championship debuts, including netminder Mat Robson, defenceman Travis Brown, Bradley Jenion and Liam Steele, as well as forwards Bayley Harewood, Jack Hopkins and Sam Lyne. These newcomers offer Russell tactical flexibility as he builds his 22-man gameday roster from a pool of 25 players.
GB’s preparation has been strong, highlighted by a win in their final warm-up game against Italy. That victory marked their second win from four pre-tournament fixtures, with the Italians proving a tough but manageable opponent.

The team’s depth is a strength, with forwards like Liam Kirk and Bayley Harewood expected to lead the charge. The defense will rely on Travis Brown and Bradley Jenion, while Mat Robson could see significant ice time between the pipes.
With the tournament in full swing, Great Britain will look to build momentum early. A win against Austria could set the tone for the rest of the group stage and give the team confidence heading into the match against Hungary.
All games are live on IIHF TV, with the next game for Great Britain set for later this week as they continue their campaign in Switzerland.
