The United States defeated Great Britain 5-1 in their second Group A matchup of the IIHF World Championships on Sunday, with Isaac Howard leading the way with a goal and two assists.
Paul Cotter gave the Americans the early lead at 13:55 of the first period, reacting first in a goalmouth scramble to put the USA up 1-0. Great Britain answered back in the second, as Nathanael Halbert tied the game with a top-shelf shot from just inside the blueline at 28:39, assisted by Josh Waller and Brett Perlini.
But the momentum quickly shifted back to the Americans. Howard restored the U.S. lead with a goal just under three minutes before the end of the second. The third period belonged entirely to the Americans, as Mathieu Olivier and Howard each added a goal, while a rebound from Declan Carlile made it 5-1. Howard finished with three points in the game, leading the U.S. in scoring.
The U.S. now stands at 2-0 in the tournament, while Great Britain drops to 0-2. With Austria defeating Hungary on Sunday, the stage is set for a potential winner-takes-all showdown between Great Britain and Hungary in their next game. Both teams still have matches remaining and opportunities to earn points beyond that fixture.
Great Britain showed resilience despite the loss, keeping the game close for the majority of the first two periods. However, the Americans controlled the flow in the final 20 minutes, outshooting the Brits 18-6 in the third.

With the tournament still in its early stages, the U.S. is looking like a serious contender, while Great Britain will need to regroup quickly if they hope to stay in the race for a top-four finish.
Great Britain will face Hungary next, looking to avoid a winless start to the group stage.
