Auston Matthews wants the Toronto Maple Leafs to know he’s committed to the team and not shopping for a new destination this summer. Despite recent rumors suggesting otherwise, the Maple Leafs’ star forward has not indicated he’s looking to leave Toronto and remains focused on the team’s direction and improvement.
Matthews has been vocal about his desire for the Leafs to build a consistent contender. He’s not demanding immediate changes by July but wants clarity on the organization’s long-term plan. With a new general manager in place and a coaching change already made, the team is in a transition period. Matthews is looking for assurance that the Leafs are moving in the right direction.
Nick Alberga of Leafs Morning Take explained: “@TheFourthPeriod has been all over this Matthews situation for weeks now. In short, it’s unlikely he’s going anywhere this summer. He likes playing in Toronto, he wants to win in Toronto. Like any star player, he just wants to know what the plan is.”
Matthews’ camp has been working to correct misinterpretations of recent media reports. Insiders suggest the messaging about his future was distorted, leading fans and media to speculate about a possible departure. The player has not publicly stated he’s leaving, nor has he confirmed he’s staying beyond his current contract, which runs through the 2026-27 season.
Darren Dreger added that conversations between Matthews and the Leafs have been constructive. “He’s just looking to see improvement, and shared some of how he sees the team and where it can get better,” Dreger said. Matthews is realistic about the challenges ahead, the team needs a new coach, a fully staffed front office, and strategic additions to the roster. He knows a full rebuild is not on the table and that progress will take time.

The Leafs currently hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, and the front office is in the early stages of building out its leadership team. John Chayka, the newly hired general manager, is still in the process of meeting with key personnel and assessing the team’s needs. Matthews is not expecting all of these pieces to fall into place by July.
What comes next is clear: the Maple Leafs have until the July 1 trade deadline to finalize their coaching staff, complete their front office hires, and begin implementing their long-term strategy. Matthews will be watching closely. If the team shows no movement or signs of progress, the pressure on the organization will only grow.
