The Montreal Canadiens are entering the 2026 offseason with momentum after a 48-24-10 regular season and a hard-fought run to the Eastern Conference Final. With 106 points, Montreal exceeded expectations and proved it can compete with the top teams in the league, including a second-round playoff win and a close series loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. Now, the focus is on building on that success without sacrificing long-term stability.
The Canadiens have a young, cost-controlled core that showed its potential in the playoffs. Players like Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Jake Evans have established themselves as key contributors. The team also has a healthy cap situation, with $9–$11 million in projected space. However, key RFA contracts still need to be signed, including those of Kirby Dach, Zachary Bolduc, and Arber Xhekaj.
The Habs’ biggest needs are a top-six center, right-shot defensive depth, and gritty right-side wingers. Patrik Laine, who recorded 38 goals and 74 points in the regular season, is an impending unrestricted free agent. If he walks, Montreal will have to find a replacement to fill a key offensive role.
General Manager Kent Hughes has ruled out a full rebuild after this year’s success. Trading for draft picks and prospects would alienate fans and erase the momentum the team has built. Instead, Hughes is leaning toward a balanced approach that adds immediate help without burning through assets.
That strategy would involve re-signing key RFAs, acquiring a 2C or right-shot defenseman, and adding a couple of physical forwards. Montreal’s high draft picks, including a first-rounder, will remain intact to continue developing prospects like Joel Dach and Rasmus Dahlin.

The Canadiens also have to decide on the future of players like Brendan Gallagher and Josh Anderson. While Gallagher is a possible trade candidate, Anderson’s playoff performance, including 14 goals and 22 points in the postseason, makes him a valuable asset to keep.
What comes next is the RFA arbitration process, which begins in early July. The Canadiens will also be active in free agency, with a goal to upgrade their top-six depth. With a balanced approach, Montreal aims to remain a playoff contender while giving its young core a chance to grow.
