F1 Qualifying at Monza 2025 Sets New Speed Records as Teams Battle for Pole

Max Verstappen set a new record lap at the 2025 Italian Grand Prix, clocking in at 1 minute 18.792 seconds with an average speed of 164.4 mph (264.681 km/h). This performance broke the previous mark set by Lewis Hamilton in 2020 and highlighted the continued evolution of Formula 1 car performance. The Grand Prix itself also saw a new record, with an average race speed of 250.706 km/h, surpassing the one set by Michael Schumacher in 2003.

Monza remains one of the fastest circuits in the world, where aerodynamics take a back seat to straight-line speed. In 2025, Alexander Albon recorded the highest race speed of the season at 226.4 mph (364.1 km/h). That figure may seem staggering, but it still falls short of the 231.52 mph (372.6 km/h) Juan Pablo Montoya achieved in 2005 with McLaren-Mercedes, a record that has stood for two decades.

Modern F1 cars prioritize downforce over outright speed, which limits their top speed. Valtteri Bottas reached the fastest recorded speed in an official Formula 1 race in 2016 at Baku, hitting 378 km/h (234.88 mph) during qualifying. This was confirmed by the Williams team and remains the highest speed ever recorded in an F1 race weekend.

Honda once tried to break the 250 mph barrier at the Bonneville Salt Flats with the RA106. They came close, achieving 397.36 km/h, the fastest speed ever recorded for an F1 chassis. However, this feat was done in a non-race setting and does not reflect the aerodynamic trade-offs made during real competition.

The 2025 season also saw the expansion of the grid from 20 to 22 cars due to the entry of Cadillac. This change affected the qualifying format, with six drivers eliminated in each of the first two knockout rounds instead of five. Q3 was extended to 13 minutes, and the gap between Q2 and Q3 was reduced to seven minutes to keep the entire session within an hour.

Qualifying remains the purest test of a driver and car’s performance. With no fuel strategy or race traffic, drivers focus on setting the fastest possible lap. The 2026 season will see new aerodynamic rules, including movable front and rear wings and an electric boost mode, but the goal of maximizing straight-line speed in DRS zones remains unchanged.

As the F1 season continues, teams will look to build on the momentum from Monza. The next major test comes at Baku, where the long straight and tight corners again offer a unique challenge for aerodynamic setups and driver precision.
