The Toronto Maple Leafs’ coaching search is heating up with more than 20 candidates already in the running, and several names beyond Joe Pavelski are generating interest, according to insider Pierre LeBrun. While Pavelski’s potential candidacy has dominated the narrative, the team is exploring a broader range of options as GM John Chayka continues to build a new-look front office.
Chayka, known for his unorthodox thinking, has already spoken to over 20 candidates in the second phase of the search. LeBrun reported that "there’s a few more interesting names in there," though he has not confirmed the identities beyond Pavelski. With the coaching market relatively thin on traditional NHL candidates, several names from junior and college hockey are emerging as potential fits.
Among the intriguing prospects is David Carle, the successful NCAA coach who led the Denver Pioneers to a Frozen Four appearance. Carle has long been a hot name in the NHL coaching world and remains a strong contender. Another candidate is Jussi Ahokas, the Kitchener Rangers head coach who led his team to a Memorial Cup title this season. Ahokas has gained recognition for his ability to develop young talent and run a high-powered system.
Gardiner MacDougall, the Moncton Wildcats head coach, is also frequently mentioned in NHL coaching conversations. MacDougall has built one of the most successful junior teams in recent years, winning multiple CHL titles and developing top prospects. If Chayka is looking for a coach who can build a winning culture from the ground up, MacDougall could be a perfect fit.
Pavelski, a Hall of Fame-caliber player, remains a bold but intriguing option. While he has no coaching experience above minor hockey, his leadership and winning pedigree could bring a fresh perspective to the Leafs’ bench. The 40-year-old forward played 1,199 games in the NHL and won two Stanley Cups with the San Jose Sharks.

The Leafs have made it clear they are not limiting their search to traditional NHL coaching candidates. With a roster full of young stars, the team needs a coach who can maximize talent and implement a modern, aggressive system. Chayka has already shown he is willing to look outside the box, and the coaching search is no exception.
The next phase of interviews is expected to narrow the list significantly. A decision could come as early as the upcoming NHL Draft in June, where the Leafs will also be making key moves to bolster their roster.

The Ottawa Senators are positioning themselves to land Edmonton Oilers goaltender Connor Ingram when free agency opens on July 1. With the Oilers seemingly unwilling to overpay to retain the 29-year-old, Ottawa sees a prime opportunity to upgrade its crease with a player who could step into a starti
