The Greensboro Gargoyles have hired Mitch Giguère as their new head coach. Giguère joins the ECHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes and Chicago Wolves after three seasons as an assistant with the Wheeling Nailers. Known for his player development expertise, Giguère brings nearly two decades of coaching experience to Greensboro.
Giguère, 40, started coaching in 2010 and has worked in multiple leagues including the KHL, QMJHL, WHL, and MJHL. During his time with the Nailers, he helped mentor a young roster and contributed to all hockey operations. In three seasons with Wheeling, the Nailers posted an overall record of 109-121-18, with a 55-60-9 mark in the regular season in 2023-24.
Zawyer Sports & Entertainment Vice President Joe Ernst praised Giguère’s leadership and preparation. “Mitch’s work over the last three seasons in Wheeling helping to build, recruit, develop, and win, combined with his detailed preparation, strong communication skills, and commitment to being an active part of the community, set him apart throughout the interview process.”
Giguère has coached players who have moved on to the NHL and AHL, including several current prospects. His background includes roles as a general manager, scout, and player development specialist. He has worked with athletes from Canada, the U.S., and Europe, helping shape talent across junior, international, and professional ranks.

“I have great excitement to rejuvenate the culture of Greensboro Hockey. I have spoken with former Monarchs and am ready to make the Gargoyles a team fans come to the rink and identify themselves with and players are proud to represent on and off the ice,” said Giguère. “I look forward to building a space where players want to be coached and feel they are trusted and believed in. Coming from a big family, with four kids and a wife, we want to build one big family between the players, coaches, and fans. There is a strong core here, now we focus on adding the next pieces.”
Giguère is expected to work closely with the Hurricanes and Wolves organizations to develop prospects. The Gargoyles open training camp on Oct. 15 in preparation for the 2024-25 season.
