The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially ended the Craig Berube era, part of a broader organizational reset under new general manager John Chayka. Speaking at his first press conference, Chayka emphasized that the coaching change was not a standalone move but part of a strategic effort to redefine the team’s culture and direction.
Chayka, who joined the Leafs in April 2026, worked closely with team president Mats Sundin during his first 10 days in Toronto. Together, they met with staff across all levels, including players, chefs, and administrative teams. “We wanted to understand the organization’s identity before making decisions,” Chayka said. This approach suggests a long-term vision focused on alignment and culture rather than quick fixes.
The Maple Leafs finished the 2025–26 season with a 41–25–10 record, securing a playoff berth but falling short in the first round. Chayka was clear that Berube’s departure was not a reflection of his coaching ability. “This was not a verdict on Craig,” Chayka said. Still, the decision was made to move in a new direction.
Auston Matthews, the team’s captain and a key figure in Toronto’s rebuild, was a topic of interest. Chayka refused to link the coaching change to player input, stating that players were not consulted in the decision. He described Matthews as a “world-class player and partner,” emphasizing a collaborative approach between management and star players.
Development and depth are also central to Chayka’s plan. He praised the Toronto Marlies’ recent playoff run and highlighted the importance of meaningful games for prospects. The Leafs’ farm team, led by Ryan Hardy and Jon Gruden, reached the second round of the AHL playoffs for the first time since 2021, a sign of growing depth.

Chayka also mentioned the team’s No. 1 overall draft pick, emphasizing the need to create the “right environment” for young players to thrive. “The right coach will help shape that environment,” he said. The Leafs have not set a firm deadline for hiring Berube’s replacement, but Chayka stressed that the search will be thorough and patient.
With the 2026 NHL Draft and free agency on the horizon, the Maple Leafs are preparing for a major transition. Chayka’s comments suggest a team in flux, seeking not just a new coach but a new identity. The next step will be finalizing the coaching search and making key decisions ahead of the summer.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are among several teams vying for the services of top unrestricted free agent Darren Raddysh, who could be a major addition to a defense that needs a serious overhaul.
