The Columbus Blue Jackets are facing a potential storm in the trade market with whispers surrounding Norris Trophy winner Zach Werenski possibly requesting a move this summer. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun raised the question, noting that while no formal request has been made, the dominoes are lining up in a way that could lead to a blockbuster development.
Werenski, 28, is under contract with the Blue Jackets through the 2027-28 season with a $9.5 million annual cap hit. He just won the Norris Trophy in 2025 after recording a career-high 79 points (15 goals, 64 assists) in 82 games. His performance has made him one of the most coveted defensemen on the market should he seek a new team.
LeBrun wrote in a recent piece: “There’s been much speculation about Zach Werenski in the wake of Larkin’s trade request, perhaps because they’re close friends and fellow Team USA gold medalists. But I can tell you as of Wednesday afternoon, I’m told there has not been any communication to the Columbus Blue Jackets indicating that kind of thing on Werenski, who has two more years on his deal.”
Still, LeBrun noted the possibility remains: “Now, having said that, I’m not ready to say that it couldn’t happen before the end of the summer, either, just based on the fact that at some point the team and player will want to talk about the future and whether or not he sees himself in Columbus long term.”
Werenski’s contract includes a no-trade clause this season but will become a modified trade clause with a 10-team protection list starting in 2026-27. This gives Columbus some flexibility to negotiate a blockbuster deal if a request is made.
The Blue Jackets are also dealing with uncertainty around pending unrestricted free agents Mason Marchment and captain Boone Jenner. Marchment, who averaged 18 points last season, is likely to command a top-six salary in free agency. Jenner, who has not received a new contract offer, is seeking long-term security.

Werenski’s potential departure would be a major blow to Columbus. He led the league in ice time (26:12 per game) and was second in scoring among defensemen. His two-way game and elite skating ability make him a prime target for contenders in need of a top-pairing stud.
A reader of LeBrun’s column pushed back on the speculation, writing: “I love reading hypotheticals as much as the next person, but the Werenski storyline in a ‘NHL Rumblings’ piece feels forced and an attempt at a headline grab. Could he request a trade? Absolutely. But as stated, there’s no meat to the story right now.”
The Blue Jackets have until July 15 to finalize long-term deals with Jenner and Marchment. Werenski’s future could be decided in those discussions. If he does seek a trade, teams will line up to acquire one of the NHL’s most dynamic two-way defensemen.

The Edmonton Oilers have been handed a trade list for defenseman Darnell Nurse, who has requested a move, and two teams have been revealed as potential destinations: the Pittsburgh Penguins and Los Angeles Kings. The leak comes from insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, who reports that Nurse
