The Carolina Hurricanes capped off a historic season by winning the 2026 Stanley Cup with a 3-0 Game 6 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. Along the way, a waiver pickup named Brandon Bussi emerged as a key contributor, and the Edmonton Oilers are reportedly considering a return for Mike Babcock.
Carolina’s triumph marked their second Stanley Cup and first since 2006. The Hurricanes did not just win, they dominated the playoffs, going 16-3 and defeating every opponent with consistency and force. The team’s unity was central to the success, with players celebrating together after hoisting the Cup for the first time in over two decades.
Brandon Bussi, acquired by the Hurricanes off waivers in October 2025, became one of the biggest value additions of the season. Initially a low-profile move, Bussi impressed in his first start and became a steady presence in net. Over 48 regular-season games, he posted a .918 save percentage and a 2.43 GAA. His playoff performance was even better, with a .931 save percentage and a 2.17 GAA across 17 games. Bussi closed the Cup Final with a 3-0 shutout, cementing his role as a reliable No. 1 goalie.

Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers are reportedly on the verge of getting Mike Babcock back on the bench. According to Chris Johnston, sources close to the situation believe the NHL is leaning toward allowing Babcock to return to coaching despite an ongoing investigation into his time with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Oilers had been waiting for both NHL and NHLPA approvals before making a move. If cleared, Babcock would become the Oilers’ head coach once again, potentially reshaping the team’s direction.
The Hurricanes also benefited from another waiver pickup earlier in the season. Dan Vladar, acquired from the Boston Bruins in a midseason trade, provided depth and added a 12-5-2 record with a .921 save percentage in 19 games. His performance helped solidify Carolina’s blue line and gave the team flexibility in managing minutes.

With the Cup now in the Hurricanes’ possession and Babcock’s potential return under consideration, the NHL’s summer will be defined by major coaching and roster changes. The Oilers have until August 15 to finalize Babcock’s return, while the Hurricanes will look to build on their championship success in the 2026-27 season.
