The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly considering a blockbuster trade that would send forward Matt Knies to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for the No. 4 overall draft pick, plus defencemen Oliver Moore and Kevin Korchinski. The deal would also involve Jacob Quillan and a second-round pick from Toronto. This potential blockbuster would reshape both teams’ rosters and signal a major shift in the Leafs’ defensive development strategy.
The trade idea, first floated by Facebook group administrator Cliff Parker, centers around the Maple Leafs’ need for offensive depth and defensive upside. By acquiring the No. 4 pick, Toronto could select Chase Reid, a two-way defenceman who is projected to be a cornerstone of their future. The Leafs would also gain Moore and Korchinski, two young defencemen with high potential and immediate NHL readiness.
Knies, 20, has shown promise with 38 goals and 21 assists in 71 games over two seasons. His physicality and offensive instincts have made him a key part of Toronto’s top-nine, but the Leafs are reportedly looking to pivot toward blue-line stability. The move would free up cap space and open up a spot for younger forwards to emerge.
The Blackhawks, on the other hand, would gain a dynamic young forward who fits their rebuild. Knies is coming off a 17-goal season and has a contract with three years remaining at an average annual value of $5.2 million. Quillan, a 23-year-old forward, brings scoring depth and versatility to Chicago’s depth chart.
Oliver Moore, 21, is a fast, skilled defenceman with a 12-goal, 27-point season in the AHL last year. Korchinski, 22, is a mobile defenceman with a 15-goal, 32-point campaign in the minors. Pairing these two with the No. 4 pick gives the Leafs immediate defensive upside and long-term flexibility.

The risk is clear: Knies is still developing and has a ceiling that could rival top-six forwards. Trading him would signal a willingness to sacrifice short-term gains for long-term structure. That’s a gamble, but one that aligns with the Leafs’ long-standing need to stabilize their back-end.
The next step for the Leafs is evaluating if this trade fits their long-term plans. With the NHL Draft approaching on July 14, Toronto will have to decide whether to pursue this blockbuster deal or look for smaller defensive upgrades. Chicago, meanwhile, will assess if Knies is the missing piece in their young, high-octane roster.
