The NHL’s trade and draft rumor mill is heating up with multiple Canadian teams making moves. The Ottawa Senators are expected to re-sign veteran center Claude Giroux, the Toronto Maple Leafs confirmed they interviewed Chris Pronger for a top executive role, and the Calgary Flames are rumored to be aggressively pursuing a trade up in the draft, potentially targeting San Jose’s No. 2 pick.
Claude Giroux is set to return for at least one more season in Ottawa. The 36-year-old veteran, who tallied 42 points in 72 games last season, brings leadership and experience to a young Senators team. While his production has dipped from his peak years (averaging 15-20 goals per season), his ice IQ and two-way play make him a key piece for a team in transition. Sens GM Pierre Dorion is expected to announce a short-term deal, likely worth around $3 million annually for one or two years, to keep Giroux’s influence intact without long-term financial commitment.
Chris Pronger, the Hall of Fame defenseman, confirmed he had a surprise interview with the Maple Leafs for the President of Hockey Ops position. The 53-year-old said the conversation with MLSE chairman Keith Pelley went well, but Toronto ultimately chose Jim Rutherford, Lou Lamoriello, and Kyle Chayka to lead hockey operations. Pronger, who has worked in front offices with the Kings and Ducks, remains active in media and shows no sign of backing away from executive opportunities. He told OverDrive, “The talk was good, but I’m not in a rush. I’ll take the right job when it comes along.”
Meanwhile, the Flames are rumored to be making aggressive moves in the draft. Sitting at No. 6, Calgary could attempt to trade up to the top of the board, with San Jose’s No. 2 pick in focus. The Flames have already had discussions with the Sharks, Blues, and Blackhawks about a potential swap. If Calgary does move up, it would likely cost them multiple draft picks, prospects, or even a low-level roster player. The Flames have been linked to top prospects like center William Eklund or forward Shane Wright, both of whom could transform their rebuilding effort.

The Flames’ front office has made it clear they’re in rebuild mode, having lost 38 games last season and finishing with a 21-32-10 record. Trading up for a generational talent could be the spark they need. With the draft just weeks away, expect more clarity by June 15, when teams can begin finalizing deals.
Next up: The Senators will finalize Giroux’s return soon, the Maple Leafs will continue their front-office shakeup, and the Flames could be just one phone call away from a blockbuster draft move.
