The San Jose Sharks are pivoting their trade strategy after Darnell Nurse ruled them out as a potential destination, turning attention toward Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly as a possible blockbuster acquisition.
With the Edmonton Oilers actively shopping Nurse, the Sharks were initially seen as a top contender due to their cap flexibility and blue-line needs. Nurse, 29, is under contract through the 2028-29 season with a cap hit of $6.25 million. However, recent reports indicate San Jose is not on Nurse’s list of preferred destinations, which are reportedly limited to Eastern Conference teams. This has forced the Sharks to explore alternative options, with Rielly emerging as a top candidate.
Rielly, 29, is in the final year of his contract and carries a $6.3 million cap hit. He is coming off a season in which he averaged 24:12 of ice time per game, ranking in the top 10 among NHL defensemen in total shot attempts (1,012) and finished with 45 points in 82 games. The Sharks, who are expected to lose Mario Ferraro and John Klingberg this summer, could use a veteran presence to mentor younger blueliners like Robertson and Jones.
The Maple Leafs, meanwhile, are looking to clear cap space and may be open to a deal that doesn’t require giving up top assets. Toronto has $12.4 million in projected cap space for next season and has been linked to a potential trade for Edmonton’s Darren Raddysh, a power-play quarterback with 37 points in 79 games this season.
If a trade for Rielly materializes, the Sharks would be absorbing a high-impact, high-minute defenseman at a reasonable cost. For the Leafs, the deal could help them shed a large cap hit and add value without sacrificing long-term assets. The Sharks, with $15.1 million in cap space, are in a strong position to make a move.

While the Maple Leafs have not ruled out holding onto Rielly, their interest in Raddysh and the need for cap relief could accelerate a trade. The Sharks, eager to upgrade their defense, are expected to make a strong offer in the coming days.
The Oilers, for their part, are still shopping Nurse and remain open to a deal if the right offer comes in. But with San Jose out of the picture, the Sharks are doubling down on their pursuit of Rielly. A deal could be announced as early as Monday.
