The Toronto Maple Leafs and Vancouver Canucks are reportedly close to a blockbuster trade that would send Morgan Rielly to Vancouver in exchange for Filip Hronek. The deal addresses immediate needs for both teams and aligns with hockey logic, salary cap flexibility, and personal considerations for Rielly.
The Maple Leafs are seeking a younger, more agile defensemen to complement Auston Matthews and improve their transition game. Hronek, a right-shot defenseman with a 21.3 average ice time per game last season, offers exactly that. He finished the 2024–25 season with 42 points in 82 games, averaging 0.51 points per game while playing a top-pairing role.
For Vancouver, Rielly brings a veteran presence and playoff experience. The Canucks, who finished 26th in goals last season, could use his leadership as they begin a rebuild. In return, they would gain Hronek’s offensive upside and the cap space flexibility that comes with his contract.
The human angle is significant. Morgan Rielly grew up in North Vancouver and has a strong personal connection to the city. He is married to Olympic figure skating champion Tessa Virtue, and the couple is known to value location and lifestyle. If they are open to a move, it could remove a major obstacle for a deal that would otherwise face resistance from Rielly’s no-trade clause.
Hronek’s contract is a key factor. He is under contract through the 2028–29 season with an annual cap hit of $7.5 million. For Toronto to acquire him, they likely need to absorb some of his remaining salary or include a draft pick in the deal. Vancouver, meanwhile, could use the trade to free up cap space and accelerate their rebuild.

The deal would also reshape both teams’ blue lines. Hronek’s mobility and puck-moving ability would give Toronto a more dynamic defense, while Rielly’s steady, two-way play would help Vancouver stabilize its young defensemen.
With the 2026 NHL trade deadline approaching on April 3, both teams will have to make a decision soon. If the Maple Leafs and Canucks can agree on terms, this trade could be one of the most significant of the season.

Seattle Torrent General Manager Meghan Turner announced Tuesday that the team has parted ways with head coach Steve O’Rourke. The decision comes after the club’s inaugural season in the Professional Women’s Hockey League, which saw the team finish in eighth place with 31 points.
