The Reds dropped an 8-1 decision to the Marlins on Thursday at loanDepot park, marking the end of a four-game series that saw Cincinnati lose the final two contests after winning the first two. The Reds, now 5-2 on their road trip, return home for a six-game homestand starting Friday against the Angels.
Dane Myers, acquired by the Reds in December, was the standout in the field but came up short at the plate. The center fielder robbed Miami’s Jakob Marsee of a potential double with a spectacular catch that clocked in at 105.6 mph. Myers leaped back to the wall, crashing into it hard but holding on to the ball. It was a play that drew praise from Reds manager Terry Francona.
"Great catch," Francona said.
Later in the game, Myers chased down a deep drive from Xavier Edwards but came up just short, allowing the Marlins to take a 1-0 lead. In the eighth, he rolled his hand on a missed diving attempt but stayed in the game and led off the ninth with a single.
Myers, who played for the Marlins last season, said he was counting steps as he approached the wall on Marsee’s drive.
"I was kind of counting my steps as I hit the track knowing I was coming up on the wall. I just tried to make a play for [starter] Rhett [Lowder]."
Miami’s offense came alive against Reds starter Rhett Lowder, who gave up five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings. The Marlins added four more in the eighth against Reds relievers. Sal Stewart, a Miami native, provided the only run for Cincinnati with a solo home run in the fifth. It was his second home run in as many games and the 10th of his young career in just 31 games.
Stewart’s blast ties him for the most home runs by a Reds player through their first 31 games since Aristides Aquino hit 14 from 2018 to 2019.
The Reds struggled offensively, managing just seven hits and going 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. They now have the fewest runs scored in Major League Baseball with 38.
"We want our guys to be aggressive, especially with fastballs," Francona said. "They started spinning it below the bat. That’s when it got a little tough for us."
The Reds will look to turn things around when they host the Angels for the first of six games at Great American Ball Park on Friday. First pitch is at 6:40 p.m. ET.

The San Antonio Spurs edged the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 on Friday night, but the story was not the win. It was Victor Wembanyama’s 40-point, 13-rebound performance in just 26 minutes, a calculated move to reach the 65-game threshold required for regular-season award eligibility.
