The St. Louis Cardinals will call up Bryan Torres for his major league debut ahead of their weekend series in Cincinnati. The move comes as the team places outfielder Nathan Church on the 10-day injured list. Torres joins the roster with no additional transactions needed, as he was added to the 40-man roster in November.
Torres, 28, is coming off a standout season with Triple-A Memphis. He hit .308/.441/.464 in 2024, posting 166 plate appearances with more walks than strikeouts. His on-base skills and contact-heavy approach have drawn attention, particularly in the International League where he ranks in the top five in OBP.
The Puerto Rico native signed with the Milwaukee Brewers as an undrafted free agent in 2015. He never advanced beyond rookie ball with the Brewers and had a brief stint with the Giants before playing in the independent leagues in 2023. The Cardinals signed Torres to a minor league contract ahead of the 2024 season. He spent that year in Double-A and moved up to Triple-A in 2024.
Torres is not a traditional prospect, as he will turn 29 in October. However, his performance in Memphis this season has been impressive. He hit .336/.454/.477 with 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts. Baseball America ranked him as the 27th prospect in the Cardinals system this offseason, citing his above-average hit tool and OBP-oriented approach.
Torres will likely serve as the left-handed option in a platoon with José Fermín and Thomas Saggese in left field. Church’s injury leaves a void in the outfield, and the Cardinals will look to Torres for his versatility and production off the bench. Church was scratched from Friday’s game with an undisclosed issue and will miss at least the next 10 days.
The Cardinals will open their three-game series in Cincinnati on Saturday. Torres will make his debut in a key matchup against a Reds team looking to solidify their playoff chances. The move shows the depth of St. Louis’ minor league system and the confidence the front office has in Torres’ ability to contribute at the major league level.

Anaheim Ducks forward Troy Terry will undergo surgery to address chronic hip impingement, potentially sidelining him for the start of the 2024-25 NHL season. The news comes after Terry played a key role in the Ducks' playoff run, tallying 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 12 games during the
