Gabriel Moreno is set to undergo an MRI after leaving Tuesday’s game due to lower back tightness, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. The Diamondbacks catcher caught the first two innings and took a plate appearance before being replaced by James McCann in the third. Manager Torey Lovullo described the injury as day-to-day and said Moreno downplayed the issue.
Moreno entered the season with a strong .275/.333/.400 slash line in 45 plate appearances, including five doubles. His early production has been a bright spot in an Arizona lineup that remains inconsistent. With McCann and Adrian Del Castillo already on the roster, the D-Backs have depth behind the plate but will be eager for Moreno to return quickly.
Corbin Carroll is also sidelined with a minor hip injury that has kept him out of the last two games. Lovullo said the 23-year-old is available off the bench and could return as early as Wednesday. Carroll began the season with a .333/.408/.690 slash line in 49 plate appearances despite missing most of Spring Training due to hamate surgery.
On the pitching side, Merrill Kelly is close to making his 2026 season debut. The right-hander is scheduled to throw a bullpen session with the big league team this weekend before being activated from the 15-day injured list. Kelly missed Opening Day with intercostal nerve irritation and had made five rehab innings in Triple-A and 6 1/3 innings in Spring Training before his injury.
With Kelly’s return approaching, Brandon Pfaadt’s spot in the rotation is in question. Pfaadt has struggled with a 6.75 ERA in 10 2/3 innings across two starts this season. If he isn’t kept in the rotation, the D-Backs could move him to a long relief role. Michael Soroka, with a 2.87 ERA in 15 2/3 innings, is also competing for a spot.
Kelly is set to make his season debut during Arizona’s upcoming three-game series against the Baltimore Orioles, which begins Monday. Pfaadt starts Wednesday’s game against the Phillies. The Diamondbacks will monitor both players closely as they try to stabilize their starting rotation and offensive production.

The San Antonio Spurs edged the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 on Friday night, but the story was not the win. It was Victor Wembanyama’s 40-point, 13-rebound performance in just 26 minutes, a calculated move to reach the 65-game threshold required for regular-season award eligibility.
