The San Francisco Giants placed starting pitcher Tyler Mahle on the 15-day injured list with a left hamstring strain Monday, retroactive to May 27. The move opens the door for Logan Webb to return from the injured list and start tonight’s game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. The Giants also activated Jung Hoo Lee from the 10-day IL after optioning outfielder Will Brennan to Triple-A Sacramento.
Mahle, a $10 million free agent acquisition, has struggled through a frustrating 2024 season. In 11 starts, he has just one quality outing and has surrendered 6.18 earned runs per nine innings. He has given up 11 home runs, ranking among the top 10 in the National League in that category. Despite a 23% strikeout rate, his 8% swinging strike rate shows hitters are making solid contact.
The injury timing defers what could have been a roster decision for manager Tony Gonsolin. Trevor McDonald has performed well at the back of the rotation, and Mahle and Adrian Houser had been the most likely candidates to lose a spot when Webb returned. With Webb back in the rotation, the Giants maintain more flexibility heading into the second half of the season.
Webb missed nearly three weeks with bursitis in his right knee. His return comes at a key moment as the Giants face the Rockies in a series that could impact the NL West standings. Lee also returned to the lineup after a short absence due to a back strain. He is set to play right field tonight against Rockies starter Michael Lorenzen.
Rookie Victor Bericoto was called up when Lee went on the IL and remains on the active roster as a right-handed bench bat. Brennan, a left-handed hitter, returns to Sacramento for more at-bats and to provide depth in the minors.
The Giants now face a Rockies team that has won six of their last eight games. They will look to build momentum as the All-Star break approaches. Webb will take the mound in a tough environment at Coors Field, where he is 1-2 with a 5.59 ERA in his career. The Giants will need strong performances from their pitching staff to keep pace in a competitive division.
