The San Diego Padres are promoting outfielder Jase Bowen for his major league debut. The move comes as the team looks to bolster its bench and add speed to the outfield. Bowen will need to clear space on both the active and 40-man rosters before he can make his first appearance.
Bowen, 25, was selected in the 11th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2019. Over 2,000 minor league plate appearances, he hit 64 home runs but struggled with plate discipline. He posted a .243/.315/.406 slash line and 99 wRC+ through 2024, with a 7.5% walk rate and 25.6% strikeout rate.
In 2025, he showed signs of improvement. He batted .272/.353/.449 with a 124 wRC+ in 366 plate appearances. His walk rate climbed to 10.7% but so did his strikeout rate, which reached 28.7%. His performance was aided by a .376 BABIP, a number that raised questions about sustainability.
This season with Triple-A El Paso, Bowen has hit .292/.362/.600 with 13 home runs and a 121 wRC+. His 9.5% walk rate and 26.6% strikeout rate remain concerning but have improved from previous years. His .349 BABIP again suggests some luck may be involved.
Despite the offensive inconsistencies, Bowen brings value beyond the box score. FanGraphs ranked him as the Padres’ 17th-best prospect in April. He has stolen at least 16 bases in each of the past four seasons and has played all three outfield positions. His speed and defensive versatility make him a useful bench option.
The Padres currently have an outfield of Gavin Sheets, Jackson Merrill, and Ramón Laureano. Fernando Tatis Jr. has been playing second base recently. On the bench, Nick Castellanos and Bryce Johnson are hitting .191/.221/.339 and .188/.257/.250, respectively. Neither is eligible for the minors, so one may be designated for assignment to make room for Bowen.
Another option is to place someone on the injured list. Nick Pivetta, who has been on the 15-day IL since April 13, is a candidate for the 60-day IL. He has yet to begin a rehab assignment and is not expected to return soon.
The Padres will finalize their roster decisions ahead of their next series. The move to bring in Bowen signals a shift in their bench strategy as the season enters its final stretch.
