Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy has put to rest any speculation about Craig Breslow’s job security, stating on WEEI’s Greg Hill show that a change in Boston’s chief baseball officer is “not even on the table.” The comment comes as the Red Sox sit at 27-39 on the season, last in the AL East and fourth-worst in all of MLB. Despite four straight losses to the Rays and a historically underperforming start, ownership is standing firm behind Breslow.
Breslow, 46, is in his third season as the Red Sox’s chief baseball officer. His contract situation remains unclear, but there is no indication that the 2026 season will be his last. Kennedy’s comments suggest Breslow is under contract through at least 2027. The decision to keep Breslow comes despite the team’s struggles, which have been compounded by poor roster construction and coaching instability.
The Red Sox began the season with a 10-17 record and a managerial change, as Alex Cora and five assistants were fired in late April. Triple-A manager Chad Tracy took over on an interim basis, and the team is 17-22 under his leadership. That’s a slight improvement but still far below expectations for a club that won 89 games last year and spent $130 million to sign Ranger Suarez this offseason.
Boston also acquired Willson Contreras, Sonny Gray, and Caleb Durbin via trade, yet the results haven’t followed. The Red Sox are now 12 games below .500 and in last place in the AL East. Their struggles have led to speculation about a midseason trade for a right-handed bat, though major deals are rare this time of year. The Red Sox made a blockbuster trade in June 2023 by sending Rafael Devers to the Giants, but they have not repeated that kind of move this year.
With the trade deadline now set for August 3, Boston’s window for impact additions is shrinking. The team has not made a splash on the trade market, and Kennedy’s comments suggest ownership is not looking for a quick fix. Instead, the focus appears to be on the long-term trajectory of the franchise. The Red Sox will need to show significant improvement over the next two months to avoid another full-scale rebuild.
Kennedy’s comments indicate Breslow is safe for now, but the next 70 games will be critical. If Boston continues to struggle, the pressure on the front office will grow. The Red Sox host the Rays again on Tuesday night in a key series that could provide a turning point.
