The Minnesota Twins have officially shifted Brooks Lee to third base, signaling the end of his experiment at shortstop. Manager Derek Shelton confirmed the move this week, stating Lee’s defensive home will now be the hot corner. The decision comes after Lee spent time at shortstop during the 2024-25 seasons but failed to meet defensive expectations.
Lee, 25, has hit .259/.315/.416 with a 105 wRC+ in 201 plate appearances this season. However, his defensive metrics have been negative, with -8 Defensive Runs Saved and -1 Outs Above Average. His bat has shown signs of life lately, with a .292/.344/.460 line in his past 123 plate appearances. Since moving to third base, Lee has recorded multiple hits in three of five games.
The move creates an opening for Kaelen Culpepper, Minnesota’s first-round pick in 2024 and a consensus top-100 prospect. Culpepper is hitting .266/.392/.557 in Triple-A this month, walking 14.4% of the time while striking out 16.5%. He swatted 11 homers in 46 games and is 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts. The 23-year-old could soon receive a promotion to the majors.
Royce Lewis’ future remains uncertain. The former top prospect has struggled this season and has been limited by injuries. Lewis, currently in Triple-A St. Paul, has hit four home runs in five games since his demotion. He’s slashing .296/.367/.963 with six homers in 30 plate appearances. The Twins are still evaluating whether Lewis can move to first base or play as a designated hitter.
Luke Keaschall, 23, is also in the mix for second base. He’s hit .271/.388/.353 in 103 plate appearances over the past month. Despite a slow start caused by injuries, Keaschall has played in 100 major league games and hit .268/.349/.374 overall. His progress gives the Twins hope for the long-term solution at second.
First base and designated hitter remain unsettled. Josh Bell is signed through the season, while Kody Clemens and Victor Caratini have seen time at first. Former first-round pick Aaron Sabato is hitting .298/.358/.661 in Triple-A but has yet to make his major league debut. The Twins will continue to monitor options as the season progresses.
The Twins will next face the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. The team has until the July 31 trade deadline to make further decisions on their roster.
