The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Colorado Avalanche 4-2 in Game 4 of the Western Conference Final on May 27, 2026, completing a four-game sweep that stunned the Presidents’ Trophy-winning team. Vegas outshot Colorado 31-23 in the series-clincher, with goaltender Logan Thompson stopping 29 of 31 shots to earn the Conn Smythe Trophy. The Golden Knights advance to the Stanley Cup Final for the second time in franchise history.
The Avalanche, who set a franchise record with 164 points in the regular season and won 16 of their first 18 playoff games, failed to adjust to Vegas’ physical style and shutdown defense. Nathan MacKinnon, who led Colorado with 24 playoff points, was held to just one assist in the final four games. Mikko Rantanen, who scored 22 goals during the regular season, managed only three in 16 playoff games.
Logan O’Connor, a key forward for the Avs, admitted the team “drifted away from the game plan” and said, “I don’t think a single guy in this locker room played to the standards that we expect.” Cale Makar, Colorado’s Norris Trophy-winning defenseman, added, “At the end of the day the regular season means nothing the second the playoffs start. The only thing a good regular season gets you is home ice, and we squandered that opportunity against this team.”
Vegas coach John Tortorella praised the Avs’ effort but noted his team’s execution was the difference. “They played with energy and structure,” Tortorella said. “We did what we had to do to win.”
The Avalanche’s supporting cast failed to produce when it mattered most. Martin Necas and Brock Nelson, who combined for 63 goals in the regular season, totaled just five in the playoffs. Erik Johnson, who returned from injury in the second round, was a liability at times, and the team’s depth scoring never materialized.

Jared Bednar, Colorado’s head coach since 2018, is now widely expected to be on the hot seat. GM Joe Sakic faces pressure to make a change after multiple playoff exits without a championship. “We said at the beginning of the year we’re judged by how we play in the playoffs,” Makar said. “Unfortunately, this year, we were able to take a step forward, but in a sense, a step back, too.”
With the season over, Colorado must decide whether to retain Bednar or seek a new voice. GM Chris MacFarland has been linked to other NHL jobs, including with the Nashville Predators. The Avs also have decisions to make on pending UFAs Brett Kulak and Brent Burns, who may consider retirement.
The Golden Knights will now face the New York Rangers or Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final, which begins on June 1. For Colorado, the summer will be defined by change, whether it’s on the bench, in the front office, or on the roster.
