TITLE: Diamondbacks Re-Sign Joe Ross to Minor League Deal, Sends Him to Reno
The Arizona Diamondbacks have re-signed right-handed pitcher Joe Ross to a minor league contract, assigning him to Triple-A Reno. Ross, who elected free agency earlier in the week after being designated for assignment, returns to the organization on a deal that allows him to remain in the Arizona system while giving him a chance to compete for a spot on the major league roster.
Ross, 32, signed with Arizona in February on a minor league deal and made three appearances with the team this season. His early work was inconsistent, as he gave up six runs without recording an out in a March 30 game against the Detroit Tigers. Two days later, he surrendered three walks and a home run to Mauricio Dubón in a 9-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves. His season debut was strong, as he worked a perfect inning, but the follow-up outings made it difficult for him to secure a spot in the majors.
The move to Reno gives Ross a fresh start. In his first appearance with the Aces, he entered in relief of pitching prospect Mitch Bratt and gave up six hits and four runs in 2 1/3 innings, including a two-run home run to Trey Mancini. While the outing was rough, it highlights the kind of pressure that Triple-A pitching staffs face as teams begin to evaluate players for potential call-ups.
Ross brings valuable experience to the table. He has started 66 games in his MLB career and has made 158 relief appearances. Last season with the Philadelphia Phillies, he worked 51 innings out of the bullpen and posted a 5.12 ERA. His versatility as a multi-inning reliever and his ability to start makes him an intriguing option for Arizona as they evaluate their pitching depth.
The deal is a low-risk move for the Diamondbacks. Ross is not guaranteed a major league spot, but his performance with Reno could earn him a recall. For Ross, the contract offers the chance to increase his minor league salary and maintain a pathway to the majors. The move also allows Arizona to keep a veteran arm on their radar without tying up significant resources.
The Diamondbacks will continue to monitor Ross’s progress as the season unfolds. Reno is expected to play again on Monday night against the Sacramento River Cats. Ross’s next start for the Aces is likely to come early next week.

The San Antonio Spurs edged the Dallas Mavericks 114-109 on Friday night, but the story was not the win. It was Victor Wembanyama’s 40-point, 13-rebound performance in just 26 minutes, a calculated move to reach the 65-game threshold required for regular-season award eligibility.
