The Colorado Rockies made a pair of roster moves Thursday, selecting the contract of 24-year-old infielder/outfielder Cole Carrigg and recalling right-hander Jeff Criswell. To make room, they placed Tyler Freeman on the seven-day concussion IL and designated Keegan Thompson for assignment.
Carrigg was selected with the 65th overall pick in the 2023 draft and has drawn praise for his all-around athleticism. A switch-hitter with speed, he played every position on the diamond except first base and right field during his college career at San Diego State. This season he has split time between shortstop and center field in the Rockies’ minor league system.
Offensively, Carrigg has compiled a .283/.359/.474 line in the minors. At Triple-A this year, he owns a .338/.414/.529 slash line with a 129 wRC+ and 30 stolen bases in 37 attempts. His 15.2% strikeout rate and 10.5% walk rate stand out as strong indicators of his plate discipline.
Carrigg is currently ranked as the Rockies’ fourth-best prospect by Baseball America, sixth by MLB Pipeline, and seventh by ESPN. His aggressive approach has drawn mixed reviews, but he has made adjustments this season after a high-strikeout stretch at Double-A in 2025.
The Rockies have a crowded outfield, with Mickey Moniak, Brenton Doyle, Jordan Beck, and now Freeman on the IL. Carrigg could see regular time in center field with Jake McCarthy moving to right. McCarthy, entering his arbitration years, could also be a trade candidate at the deadline.
Keegan Thompson, 31, was claimed off waivers from the Reds in the offseason and outrighted to Triple-A before Opening Day. He returned to the Rockies’ roster in late May and has posted a 9.00 ERA in 12 innings of work. His 3.5% walk rate is impressive, but a .419 BABIP has hurt his numbers. Thompson’s contract includes $765,000 remaining, and he could clear waivers again.
With the Rockies at 24-42 and trending toward a sell-off at the deadline, roster moves are likely. Carrigg’s arrival offers a glimpse of the future while Thompson’s uncertain status highlights the team’s flexibility. The Rockies will have decisions to make in the coming weeks as injured players return and the trade market heats up.

The Conn Smythe Trophy race is nearing its conclusion as the Stanley Cup Final heads toward a potential Game 6 or Game 7. With Mitch Marner and Jordan Staal emerging as the top candidates, the outcome will likely hinge on which team lifts the Stanley Cup. Marner leads the way if Vegas wins, while St
